Tigers Take from the Cheap Seats

Reality is still setting in As I finish my statistical review of the Tigers loss to Rice, the story told is not a pretty one.  The Memphis Tigers continue to slip into their new role as a mediocre team in a mediocre conference.  It’s a painful reality that will be hard to face but needs to be addressed and hopefully overcome.  After all, this team is still too talent to go down in flames never to rise from the ashes again.  So, here’s hoping for the old team to show up on Saturday against Wichita State.  As usual, if you hear a crazy man scream from the cheap seats, it will likely be me. GTG!! Memphis lost because of all …

Simple Truths Biting the Tigers

Pinch me and help me out of this nightmare run As I am still trying to absorb the stunning loss of the Memphis Tigers to Rice, I am facing some simple truths biting the Tigers. I am also still coming to grips with not being shocked at this loss, one described by one observer as one of the worst losses in program history.  Not sure what that says about me or the program, but it just another simple truth biting the Tigers – like so many this season. At times the Tigers can’t hit a three-pointer.  And in this game, it was the make-or-break stat.  Yet if the Tigers had abandoned their three-point funk and focused on quality twos, they …

Tigers Tame Themselves

Dishearted But Not Surrendering My beloved Memphis Tigers surrendered a twenty point lead to USF as my son and I exchanged WTF texts to each other. As a season ticker holder, it was a rare time when I watched them play on TV. Damn ice. Yet it was also a chance to verify what I thought I was seeing from the cheap seats in the FedEx Forum. And it was in Penny finally airing the team’s issues that made me realize that, yes, we have a problem. The fact that we have a problem in Memphis is not that hard to believe. It’s part of our makeup, no matter who is coaching. No matter what year it is. No matter …

Umpire on Defense for SMU

At the SMU/Memphis game and watching SMU get two assists on defense by the UMPIRE. On two plays with balls over the middle, the crossing pattern was blocked effectively by the umpire resulting in two incomplete passes. Hannigan tried to thread it around him, but just no room. In the umpire’s defense, he’s blocking up the middle for everyone. Not even moving out of plays run right at him. I just hope he doesn’t get run over. But no matter what, he’s adding a new dimension to the game. And helping eliminate the middle of the field for passing. Update 1 In keeping up with the Umpire’s inclusion in the game, he also loves to make defensive players move from …

Another Day Another Kickoff

Go Tigers Go! It’s 20 minutes to kick. It’s hot as he’ll so perfect Memphis football weather. We can’t play unless we’re all melting together. Hopefully, it will also give us a bit of an advantage against Boise St. Hopefully they’ll melt a little more than us. Tiger Lane is crowded. Tiger fans are filing in. Here’s to hoping for a great Tigers’ win. And some good ole Memphis football. It ain’t pretty but it is fun. GO TIGERS GO! 10 minutes to go to kickoffOnce again my wife opines that the Alma mater song should be I’m so glad I go to the UofM. My only thought is I miss Tom the Tiger. Unfortunately my wife won’t let me …

Tigers Shoot 3s with Their Paws

It’s the second half of the Memphis Tigers’ warm-up game with Lane College. With 16 minutes to go in the game, they have finally hit their first three of the day. And it only took eleven – yes 11, that’s two ones side by side. But I have a theory – they shoot like they are real Tigers – off their paws. Of course, the real reason seems to be simple. Even from the cheap seats, I can see two big errors. First, they tend to shoot flat, like they are aiming for a straight shot at the rim – any rim. Second, they tend to have poor follow-through with the shots. For the most part, it looks like an …

Bad Food, Bad Weather, Bad Game, Bad Hotel, Great Weekend

A Short Road Trip with My Wife Friday, my wife, and I got the word that we would be able to take a short spur-of-the-moment trip to see our beloved Memphis Tigers football team play on the road. Honestly, it has been over a decade since we have had that opportunity in our lives. But that’s a story for another day. So, with a whirlwind of planning, we took off on the worst best trip you can imagine. Our beloved Tigers were playing in Starkville, MS versus Mississippi State. So, the first order of business was to secure tickets for the game. That turned out to be quite easy and we got great seats for under $70 total. So off …
